MOAR DUCKLINGS!

Dad and I went to the State Fair today, where we showed impressive restraint in the food department, I think. We split a scone right off, then indulged in some pork products (BACON ON A STICK!!!), but we stayed away from anything that was served in a plastic bucket, so I think we did pretty well. I mean, none of it was healthy (except for the blackcurrant tea, which may have been okay), but at least we didn't overindulge. And now I'm eating an organic apple off one of the trees at the farmstead, so there. The fair also had baby animals and an awesome band called the Sweet Colleens. They played a tune called "I Ate My Fiancée" that about killed me.
Anyway. Since this weekend is likely the last time I shall see the little ducklings, I took them into the backyard on Sunday and had a little photoshoot.
First off, I had to get some shots of them running, because running ducklings are the funniest things ever. Their necks stretch and their useless little wings go out and they motor, and they often fall over their own feet.
Here they are running towards me and running away from me. Both shots were easy enough to get, since the ducklings can never seem to decide if I am their mother, or their greatest fear.

If I walk away from them, they chase me.

If I walk towards them, they flee.

Here's a shot in which a few of them are headed my way. A few moments later, they all decided to cluster around me and nibble my pants. The buttons on my jeans caught their interest, and when I sat down, a few enterprising ducklings crammed their entire heads up my pantlegs to see if there were any eatables on my shins (I was sorry to disappoint).

MUST. EAT. PANTS.
I decided to try dangling my camera cord enticingly to see if I could get any decent shots that way. I didn't get any decent ones, but I did get one that is effing hilarious.

I laughed for a good ten seconds when I saw how this one had turned out. Pity it's out of focus. :P

Ducklings at attention.

They enjoyed exploring the edge of the pond, but didn't fancy actually going in. They'd flop on the rocks and stretch their necks out so they could drink and so on.

But the one time a duckling actually wound up in the water, it immediately scrambled back out.

Then they all fled, peeping excitedly.

After all that excitement (and a brief break for food), it was time for naps.

Date: 2009-09-08 02:06 pm (UTC)Of course, it helped that everything was hellaciously overpriced. Most beverages were at least three dollars regardless of size.
I know! They get in and are like, "AAAHHH THIS IS NOT MY ELEMENT!"

Date: 2009-09-08 06:10 pm (UTC)Ahaha, everything on a stick at the state fair!
The other day I was actually telling some people that I hate flying chair rides so much that last year when you and your brother went on one at the fair I had to plead cowerdice and find another ride XD

Date: 2009-09-08 06:14 pm (UTC)We actually didn't go on ANY rides this year, because it was just Dad and me. We walked and looked at art and stuff instead, and bought my mom a pair of Australian Shepherd socks. And we stopped by the education building to tell my alma mater that I was gainfully employed. :P
