1) We had this chrysalis we were keeping in a jar on the counter, and it just hatched into a black swallowtail butterfly. So I was going about my business, and suddenly there was a butterfly on the counter. I just took it outside and stuck it on the lilac bush by the door. It's just hanging there, drying off. Whee!

I love swallowtails! They're sp pretty! Sadly, my boss has a collection of pinned ones in his office (he's a crazy scientist, what can you do?).

And way cool about the chrysalis, too. I've never seen one (that was still alive) in the real world...only in butterfly gardens.

:D It comes complete with ghetto cover art!

Every now and then, we'll find a caterpillar that looks pretty close to forming a chrysalis. Then we stick them in peanut butter jars with a stick and a handful of whatever leaves they eat and wait. We've hatched a few monarchs, but this is the first swallowtail.
