I'm perusing the National Geographic website, which has some interesting stuff.
Global warming may be staving off an Ice Age.

Maps: they don't love you like I love you. EarthPulse looks like a pretty interesting series, I must say.
Also, their photo galleries almost always have free desktop-sized versions of everything. I usually have a NatGeo background (when I don't have an APOD background).
