I have met [livejournal.com profile] goddessofchaos and [livejournal.com profile] hukbillgoomba, seen more gorgeous scenery than you can shake a stick at, eaten lunch in what was the home of Lord Darnley, explored a very old building the color of cheese whiz, had the most delicious dessert I've ever had, and accosted the wrong tall brunette tour guide named Andrew.

And we still have three days to go!

Fwee!

In less than an hour, I head to the airport (I was going to stay until 12:30, but I hadn't realized there was a Twins game today and I want to beat the rush). EXCITEMENT!!!

It's anyone's guess how well I'll be able to keep up with LJ, but my guess would be Not Very, as I'll be wifi-dependent. If anything monumental happens in the next nine days, let me know! And I'll give you all the Picspam To End All Picspams upon my return.

Be well, my friends. I'll catch you on the flipside. ;)

Do you like mystery, murder, mayhem, the supernatural, detective work, Germany, cats and/or eyepatches?

Then why the hell aren't you reading Berlin Confidential already?

Here, get yourself acquainted. It is delicious; you won't regret it.

Must... share... hilarity...

BUT FIRST!

Messed Up Family Tree

Many many years ago
when I was twenty three,
I got married to a widow
who was pretty as could be.

This widow had a grown-up daughter
who had hair of red.
My father fell in love with her,
and soon the two were wed.

This made my dad my son-in-law
And changed my very life.
My daughter was my mother,
For she was my father's wife.

To complicate the matters worse,
Although it brought me joy,
I soon became the father
Of a bouncing baby boy.

My little baby then became
A brother-in-law to dad.
And so became my uncle,
Though it made me very sad.

For if he was my uncle,
Then that also made him brother
To the widow's grown-up daughter
Who, of course, was my step-mother.

Father's wife then had a son,
Who kept them on the run.
And he became my grandson,
For he was my daughter's son.

My wife is now my mother's mother
And it makes me blue.
Because, although she is my wife,
She is my grandma too.

If my wife is my grandmother,
Then I am her grandchild.
And every time I think of it,
It simply drives me wild.

For now I have become
The strangest case you ever saw.
As the husband of my grandmother,
I am my own grandpa.

"Heaven" was freaking awesome. Dang. I don't think I can come up with a coherent review right now, but DANG.

So in other news, I found this:

I think it's kind of catchy. GANG FIGHT!

If this rendition of "Danny Boy" doesn't move you to tears, you have a heart of stone.

It gets me every time.

This is so amazing it is almost heartbreaking. For the linkphobic: Japan has just donated 350,000 Euros towards demining efforts in Bosnia and Herzegovina, at a time when they would be pretty justified in focusing on their own troubles.

Anyone who doesn't think Japan is totally awesome can kindly remove themselves from my life posthaste. Seriously, there's the door.

Hee!

Live in northern climes? Longing for spring?

Well, tough. It's only just barely March. You still have snowstorms in your future.

But in the meantime, there's Rainy Mood. Crank it up, sit back, and pretend it's May.

HA!

Since I am home early, and since an overcast sky and snow make for good lighting conditions, I decided to have a little photoshoot.

Orchids are difficult to photograph. )

Anyone who was a sophomore in high school during the 1999-2000 school year probably remembers this question with fondness, am I right? :P Minus the "except for looks" caveat, that is, which I think might rule out the answer I used back then: I want a prehensile tail. Come on, you know it would be awesome.

A small, tortie cat just wandered into our apartment. Waltzed right in while John was holding the door open, trying to get all of his things together before he left. I was alerted by his relatively calm, "Holy fucking shit, a cat just walked into our apartment."

I didn't see it at first because it was so wee (not a kitten, just wee compared to Fivey's noble bulk), but Fivey saw it and was crouched by the futon, staring it down. The little tortie stared back, and I decided I'd best pick it up before the two had a chance to decide they didn't feel like getting along. Fortunately, the little tortie didn't seem to mind being held--at least not to the point of violent protest.

So that's how I wound up wandering the hall, knocking on doors, asking if anyone had lost a cat. Turns out the little tortie belongs to the people at the far end of the hallway (of course... thank goodness there aren't that many units per floor), who hadn't even realized she'd given them the slip. They were very happy to get her back.

Fivey is now having an existential crisis. He thought he was the only cat here! It never would have occurred to him that he would need to stand guard by the door in case another cat came in, but it sure has occurred to him, now. Even as he flops on my rug and plays with his catnip rat, he's always within sight of the front door, his tail fluffed to a greater degree than normal. Poor puss.

[livejournal.com profile] stringertheory is awesome. You should go friend her, and ask her some questions.

In other news, I have a little pebble-filled tray for Winston! I'd take a picture, but it's dark out. I also did a bit of orchid care research, so with a little luck, he'll thrive. Go, Winston, go!
