I know!! I'm so upset :'( He's been one of my favourites for about 8 years. My only consolation is that at least he died a cool way. He was far too awesome to get hit by a bus or eat bad chicken.
Bleh. I'm going to have to start buying The Croc Huntah on DVD so I can watch it.
Also, they were filming at the time, which makes me wonder if at some point his death will be aired. Which would be disturbing. But I'm kind of morbidly curious; I think I'd have to see it to believe it.
My mum and I where actually discusing that this afternoon.
They'll have to get permission of the family and lawyers and such. The maybe edit it so it's not... you know... TOO disturbing. The they'd have to either release it exclusivly to a single chanel or do a world wide release. It's probably be shown after the water shed hour.
OR they might make it into a documentory so then it'd take even longer.
He died doing what he loved. ...and I totally cribbed that line from one of the "Whaler on the Moon" from Futurama, but dammit, it's true. He was truly a hero of envrironmentalism for our time, and I don't know how we'll go on without him.
...although I have this disturbingly funny vision of everyone wearing mourning shorts at the funeral.
My guess is they'd edit out the actual blow, but unless his family objects I think they'll probably put together what they had of the documentary and air it.
I am sorry for your loss. I thought of you the second I heard about it on BBC last night. If only it had been a giant squid, his death could have done some good
It's sad... but somehow fitting. I think if nature played as big a role in my life and my heart, I would want to die by it too. How odd and perfectly appropriate that it was nature that stung his heart. I do feel bad for his family, however.
Well, may he rest in peace and be remembered just as he always was - a nature-lover who wasn't afraid to take risks in order to get close to what he loved most.
And by the by, I think I happened upon your page randomly once upon a time and thought you very interesting and awesome. That is why you were added to my friends list.
I know!!! I'm totally crushed! Like... I don't even know how to handle that information. Especially since apparently there are Crocodile Hunter dies hoaxes like every year... but then I saw this was on CNN and I was like... damn. Just crushed.
Yeah, I can understand the fittingness, but Jesus, he was forty-four. His son isn't even three. It'd be poetic if he was eighty, but so soon... meh. :(
(Though the sting through the heart... that's like a message from God or something. What were the chances of that happening??)
And ahhh, okay. *is flattered* I poked around your LJ a bit, and I really like your poetry and artwork.
Rumors have circulated in the past, which is why when my Mom told me he'd died, my immediate reaction was, "Oh, come on; it's not even April first!" Then she showed me the paper, and I looked at the headline, and I found myself actually smiling a little because the idea of the Croc Huntah dying by the sting of some animal struck me as ludicrous and impossible, and obviously the stupid paper had gotten it wrong and would soon be printing a retraction.
Great! You are avenging. I am trying to convince the world of their evil plot. We are a natural team. TEAM SQUID KILLERS! We can have some sort of "motherfucking giant squid" slogan.
On Yahoo this morning they said the manager had viewed the tape. They're holding it as evidence at the moment which is usual when high profile people die in strange ways. They say that it shows that he didn't threaten the sting ray (so maybe it'll be jail time for the ray? I dunno). But here's the thing...
Just before he died, there's footage of him pulling the barb out of his chest *shudder*
Something that occurred to me: Rest In Peace, or RIP, is an inappropriate epitaph for Steve. Far more fitting would be Have Fun Jumping On Those Heavenly Animals And Explaining Them To The Angels, Who Already Know But Who Will Be Entertained Nonetheless, or HFJOTHAAETTTAWAKBWWBEN.
I guess it was bound to happen sooner or later. :( You can only play with fire (or deadly wildlife) for so long, you know?
I'm glad you posted that article, though. I heard tell that he was killed by a mosquito bite. That would've been so ironic, even if mosquitos are statistically more deadly than crocodiles.
I still can't believe it :/ As it is, out of all things to get him... it was just bad luck. I mean, it got him straight in the heart... dang. Poor Steve. Poor family. I feel so bad for them.

Maybe it really was a giant squid, but the Australian government is hushing it up. >_>

But that's not the case.
I still don't think it's fully hit me, yet.

Hmm...maybe RIP does have its advantages.

And yes, that he left his poor family behind is the most tragic part of his death. u,u
